Are your clothes intelligent?

Over the next five years, intelligent clothing will become increasingly commonplace, particularly in areas such as sports, leisure and business. Smart jogging pants that give a rundown on a sportsman or woman's physical performances are just one example. Trousers that keep a track of the day's activities are another idea under development.

There are two main types of clothing. On one site, the 'wearable computers' that do not form the clothes' structure itself, but are carried as add-ons. On the other, there are 'intelligent clothes' that react to external or physiological stimuli to regulate and verify the wearer's well-being.

So France Telecom R&D's GSM jacket is a 'wearable computer' because it integrates an extra-flat mobile phone in its lining, with the keyboard in the lapel and a microphone in the collar. As is the fibre optic screen that gives access to animated visual information such as texts or pictograms. The first prototype comes in the shape of a large belt that can be worn alone or as part of other clothing or a backpack.

The clothes maker Reima-Tutta Oy has launched a project whose objective is to associate existing techniques with a snow-sledge driver's outfit, and thus make a prototype piece of intelligent clothing. This new item of Finnish design is likely to revolutionize clothing for use in changeable atmospheric conditions. The outfit detects body activity and sends an alert when necessary. Thanks to fibres that conduct electricity, it will make it possible to transfer warmth to the parts of the body that are cold. Equally, cooling could be done automatically.

Intelligent clothing could also be a solution for those people who don't want to burden themselves with a mobile phone or computer, etc.
