The future of intelligent agents

We are already in 2003.
2003… How is it possible to imagine what the technological future will be like in 1, 5, 10 or 30 years time? Now, when we watch '2001: A Space Odyssey', a sigh of regret accompanies the realization that the future imagined in this epic film has not come to be. That the artificial intelligence of Hal the supercomputer is still at the development stage, that commercial space voyages are still a rarity. This is 2003, three years after the year 2000, in which last centuries' scientists and writers used to imagine Mankind tearing around the earth in spacecraft, being served by robots, living in intelligent homes, and having developed intelligence and a lifestyle unequalled by anything that had gone before.

Watching this kind of film, reading books whose future is already our present or even our past, nostalgia gradually sets in and gives rise to the question 'What will our technological future look like?'. Was it all pure fantasy? Of course, technological advances are often discreet and far removed from the images of fiction… But not always, you may say. By looking more closely, we can see concepts, often taken from the world of science fiction, that are gradually emerging and taking their place in our reality. Domotics, even if not widespread for the moment, is a recognised sector that is developing slowly but surely. Robots are already taking their first steps in the service of mankind. Too often relegated to the 'toys' department, these robots, often acting as a domestic companion, possess technology that would have been unimaginable only ten years ago: speech recognition, mobility, interactivity… Advances in this field are very rapid, judging by the progress made by Asimo. Intelligent agents, those digital robots, are also evolving quickly and becoming more and more essential as the years go by.

At the end of the day, it would take a very wise man to predict the future! Even if you do get a serious advantage by reading the AgentLand newsletter ;-)

Best wishes for 2003 from the AgentLand team.
