Getting organized with agents
The barriers are crumbling between the Web and personal information on your hard disk, as we advance towards total integration of the Internet and everyday technology. The distinction between life 'on-line' and 'off-line' is tending to disappear. Equally, what were once the specificities of the Internet - mind-blowing quantities of information, difficulty in finding your way around so much content and of keeping track of changes - are echoed in the mass of information that now characterises our professional and personal lives. Very naturally, agent technologies, developed to answer the questions posed by the Internet, are following this movement.
Copernic, a heavyweight in the world of on-line information research, is a good bellwether. Its new tool, Copernic Empower, uses agent technologies to help businesses index, retrieve and summarize the multitude of documents that they possess across the organization.
For individuals, agents like Enfish OneSpace offer an integrated workspace for managing personal information seamlessly, whether it be found in e-mails, Web pages or documents in various formats. Elsewhere, the family of desktop agents, such as Butterfly or the IVOS (Intelligent Voice Operating System) presents a new way of interacting with the content of your computer.
So if you feel like you are drowning in the rising tide of information, come and take a look at the agents that could arrive in time to save you!
