Chatterbots
B.O.B.
What gave you the idea of developing a bot?
BOB was the first attempt by kmpinternet.com to develop new avatar
technology. Using a knowledgebase system from kiwilogic.com, we integrated a
flash and generator interface onto BOB, allowing him not only to write out
the answers, but also to speak the answers and move his lips.
Is creating bots a passion for you? A hobby?
It's all during work hours for kmpinternet.com
When did you start creating bots? Why?
We've been working on Linguabots and avatars coming up to a year now
What language is your bot programmed in?
BOB is programmed using a knowledgebase system from kiwilogic.com
How much time do you spend working on your bot per week/month/year?
We try to spend around an hour a day on BOB, but this is not always
possible, but we always review the logs and continually make small changes
to BOB to keep him up to date.
In your opinion, what are the best qualities of your bot?
BOB is both animated and can speak his answers, so he goes one step further
than most Bots by performing almost like a human would. Most Bots can only
give out a written answer which makes them fairly life-less, but BOB's
ability to move and speak is a great achievement.
What is your ultimate goal for your bot?
We would like to see BOB interacting more with the visitors to our site, so
wherever they go around the site, BOB will be on hand to guide them through
the site.
How do you see chatterbots being used in the future?
Avatars and Bots have the potential to make websites far more user-friendly.
kmpinternet.com have developed other avatars that have gone done this.
Can chatterbots replace humans?
Bots can never replace humans, although they are at present fairly clever,
we can't make them too clever or else we'd all be out of jobs!
What is your favorite bot memory?
It would have to be when people try asking BOB really bizarre questions or
try to be rude to him, but we've covered for that eventuality and BOB comes
back with a brilliant and witty answer. It's not what the user expects which
of course creates a great impression for the user.
What was your worst bot moment?
When we go through the logs, one of the worst things we see is when people
just swear or abuse BOB. Of all the thousands of recognitions that BOB can
respond to, he may only sometimes use two; the swearing and abuse
recognition. But of course, we've covered that eventuality, and BOB won't
stand swearing for long!
