What gave you the idea of developing a bot?
|
In 1998, Mark Humphrys began lecturing in DCU, the University I did my degree
in. He brought along a fairly extensive webpage, including a description of
MGonz, a chatterbot he had linked up to the 'net in his undergrad days in UCD.
Intrigued by this, I decided to reimplement his LISP bot in shell and C, and
later just C. I added my own augmentations, but the bot, according to Mark is
still recognisably 'Gonzian'.

Is creating bots a passion for you? A hobby?
|
Not as such. I am currently doing research into the World-Wide Mind Project
[www.w2mind.org], which is research into availability of autonomous agents via
the web. Whether these agents can be desribed as 'bots' is a matter of opinion.

When did you start creating bots? Why?
|
Early 1998. Because it was interesting.

|

How much time do you spend working on your bot per week/month/year?
|
MGonz is no longer being maintained, although I plan to renovate him at some
stage. I rotate his log every so often.

In your opinion, what are the best qualities of your bot?
|
Faithfulness to what is/was a fairly famous bot. An admirable irreverance.
MGonz does not judge, he simply derides.

What is your ultimate goal for your bot?
|
MGonz does not wish for world domination. He simply wishes to be loved for
what he is. That, and more vocabulary.

How do you see chatterbots being used in the future?
|
As they are now. For amusement.

Can chatterbots replace humans?
|
Not right now. What they could replace, perhaps, is certain menial tasks
humans do now. Anything at a higher level than that isn't really realistic,
for this definition of 'chatterbot', and at our current technology level.

|

What was your worst bot moment?
|
Discovering that MGonz did not have world domination plans. I'd make a great
sidekick. I have a cape and everything.
