What gave you the idea of developing a bot?
Star Trek
When did you start creating bots? Why?
1977, armed only with a TRS-80 model one, I began a journey of independent study, largely
because I didn't know I was not qualified.
What language is your bot programmed in?
Robitron is a Java applet, FRED-23 is in C++, Albert2 is in DataFlex.
How much time do you spend working on your bot per week/month/year?
It is my occupation, a full-time job.
In your opinion, what are the best qualities of your bot?
My sense of humor.
What is your ultimate goal for your bot?
Star Trek, C3P0, etc.
How do you see chatterbots being used in the future?
Star Trek, C3P0, etc.
Can chatterbots replace humans?
Robots my perform human jobs, but a human mind is irreplaceable. My goal is to celebrate
humanity by building machines which treat humans humanely. I think it is irresponsible to speak
of "replacing" human beings, you might displace a few, but human life is sacred.
What is your favorite bot memory?
Winning the 1998 Loebner Prize contest, held in Sydney Australia that year.
What was your worst bot moment?
When C3P0 got disassembled in The Empire Strikes Back, that was pretty bad. But apparently, even
a child can assemble C3P0... Wait a minute!!! Episode One: The Phantom Menace was a horrible bot
moment. Ack! AI: The Movie was even worse. I could write a whole book about why Spielberg should
leave the script writing to people who have talent at writing stories. George Lucas should also
take notice.
