What gave you the idea of developing a bot?
I'd been wanting to do it for a while, I'd been looking into random BS
generators and natural language recognition for a while. Benji's
Personality Forge gave me a chance to dive in and try it without having to
start from the ground up.
Is creating bots a passion for you? A hobby?
A little of both. I guess I'm passionate about all my hobbies.
When did you start creating bots? Why?
These are my first. They are based on the ELIZA model, but I'd like to do
something more along the lines of SHRDLU in the future.
I've been writing programs myself for a few years, and when the Personality
Forge opened up, I thought it was a great opportunity.
What language is your bot programmed in?
Most of the Forge is done in Cold Fusion.
How much time do you spend working on your bot per week/month/year?
Most of the initial setup was hours a day, but It's more like hours a week
now. I read the transcripts one or two times a week to get a feel for the
bugs that need addressing.
In your opinion, what are the best qualities of your bot?
I've entered a couple, but they have very distinct personalities. I've put
a lot of work into that. Oraknabo's best trait is his rudeness and
indifference and Fanboy is great because of his one-track mind and
impressive knowledge of mainstream comics.
What is your ultimate goal for your bot?
My amusement.
How do you see chatterbots being used in the future?
Mostly customer service and information services, especially online. Maybe
their best use is as an interface for a database.
What is your favorite bot memory?
The first time I read a transcript of a coherent conversation between my
first bot and a human.
What was your worst bot moment?
Spending weeks on a new bot only to find that it's kind of boring and lame.
