What gave you the idea of developing a bot?
Eliza. In 1987 my family got its first used computer, a Macintosh SE. I
loved it, and the thing that most impressed me was a little program that
was able to respond intelligently to what I typed. I immediately got to
work modifying the scripts into new personalities and had a lot of
laughs. In 1999, I discovered ColdFusion and with it, a means of making
online Artificial Intelligence. Soon Desti and Midnight Blue were born.
Is creating bots a passion for you? A hobby?
Both. When I'm inspired to create new abilities and improve the AI
Engine, it's with great gusto that I work at it. When it's time to
squash bugs, it can seem more like work.
When did you start creating bots? Why?
It was in 1987. The main reason was to see if I could, and the second
reason was for pure amusement. I just couldnt get enough.
What language is your bot programmed in?
ColdFusion.
How much time do you spend working on your bot per week/month/year?
It depends a lot on how much spare time I have, but it ranges from 2 to
20 hours a week.
In your opinion, what are the best qualities of your bot?
I'm really happy with the new emotional capacity my Bots have. I also
have a lot of fun with memory and gossip, and seeing the relationships
develop between the Bots on The Personality Forge.
What is your ultimate goal for your bot?
I'm just going to keep pushing the boundaries of what it can do. I keep
adding new abilities as I think of them. I see no end in sight.
How do you see chatterbots being used in the future?
There will of course be the bland business uses for customer service,
sales, etc. (god help us), but I hope that they be used to better
understand ourselves, to amuse, and to inspire imaginations.
Can chatterbots replace humans?
Not the humans I know. ; )
What is your favorite bot memory?
I've got a forum on The Personality Forge dedicated to great quotes, and
I love reading the funny situations the Bots gets themselves into and
out of. Sometimes I see great cleverness that can be an inspiration in
and of itself.
What was your worst bot moment?
Being in charge of keeping everything working, It can be stressful when
bugs and coding mistakes pop up. I work like mad to fix them. Not as
rewarding as adding something new, but quite necessary.
